Whoa this is exciting...but why Italy?

Updated: Aug 17, 2019

Before I get into all of the excitement of moving here, you may be wondering what's going on - why are we moving to Italy? Well it's all a bit of serendipity...you probably know that I have been teaching Economics and Math at the awesome Atlanta International School (AIS) for 8 years. Thanks for a wonderful 8 years AIS!

Other than an expatriate assignment in England back in 2002-2004, we've lived here in ATL for almost 30 years, and never really had any intention of moving away. But the stint in the UK had made us wonder...what would it be like to live in Europe someday on our own, without the kids (and with a somewhat less demanding job than the old Hewitt days)?

Nick & Celeste first day of school, St. Albans, UK 2002

So when my friend and former AIS colleague Brandon Rogers took on the job as Head of Secondary School at the International School of Turin, I half-jokingly told him to "call me if he ever needed a three-quarters Italian-American to come over and teach Economics."

Fast forward a year, and Brandon indeed made that call! It was a tough decision to leave AIS, but we pushed past the FOMO and realized this was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. A chance to try out my teaching show on the road, work with a very respected colleague again, and live in a beautiful part of the world (all while getting in touch with my roots) for a couple of years. And the timing seems right - Barbara's writing work makes her super-mobile and the kids are as self-sufficient as they've ever been.

So...off we go!
